ILLUSTRATION PROJECT

Huldra Hildur

Author and musician Aslak Brimi has written a children's story about two girls from two different worlds becoming friends. The story is about a girl named Hildur, who is a “huldre” (a mythical woodland creature in Norwegian folklore), and her friendship with Tore, a boy from the city who is spending a summer helping out on a mountain pasture farm. Tore is not used to animals, cows, or the rustic life of the seter (the mountain pasture), but Hildur guides him, keeps him on track, and adds joy whenever life gets a bit dull by teasing him, singing, and encouraging others to join in. The narrative explores themes of friendship, adapting to new environments, and the beauty of nature and rural life.

Aslak liked my previous work on a project for Gullbarna, and asked me to do similar artwork for his children’s book.

Solution

Through close cooperation with Aslak, his characters and world came to life through my paintings. The characters and compositions were first sketched out by hand, then painted in watercolours, and finally touched up with digital tools.

The finished project composed of one event-poster and 20 illustrations for the book.
