EDITORIAL DESIGN & ILLUSTRATION PROJECT

2025 Calendar

Fugleadvokatene, based in Oslo, rescues and rehabilitates injured or abandoned birds. The organisation educates the public about avian welfare through a team of dedicated volunteers and specialists. They promote bird conservation and emphasise the ecological importance of avian species, reflecting their vital role in the urban environment.

I was commissioned to design the 2025 calendar for Fugleadvokatene, which is sold both online through social media and at local markets. The revenue from these sales helps cover the costs of rescuing and rehabilitating injured birds.

The calendar showcases 12 bird patients from the past year, each representing a different species. My aim was not only to inform the public about the wide variety of birds in need of rehabilitation but also to humanise these patients—giving each bird an individual identity in order to evoke empathy and strengthen the connection between the audience and the cause.

Solution

To set this design apart from the one I created for them in 2022, when I illustrated the environments and not the birds, I chose to illustrate the birds. My goal was for the calendar to be something customers would want to buy for the artwork itself, not only because it supports a good cause.

The illustration style was intentionally designed to resemble unfinished sketchbook drawings, captured in a casual, outdoor setting. The calendar’s colour palette is kept monotone to ensure the focus remains on the illustrations themselves, and the boxed layout has the same purpose.
